One of the perks of being Chinese in England? Celebrating two New Years in just a few weeks! It never truly feels like the year has started until Lunar New Year arrives.
Memory of Beijing
Growing up in Beijing, this season meant family gatherings, dumpling, fireworks and—of course—waiting for those red envelopes. Back then, having just 100 RMB (like 10 pounds) in my pocket made me feel like I could buy the world at Miaohui—the bustling temple fair filled with everything from local crafts to sizzling street food.

The Mysterious Snake
Now, we enter the Year of the Snake, one of the most intriguing zodiac signs. Often linked to cunning, it also symbolizes wisdom, longevity, and transformation. Unlike the powerful Dragon or fierce Tiger, the Snake relies on agility, speed, and adaptability, always striking at the perfect moment and unexpected precision.
In Chinese culture, the Snake carries many fascinating meanings:
- Prosperity & Luck – Traditional stories tell of snakes leading people to hidden gold, making them a symbol of wealth.
- Life & Renewal – In the ancient poetry collection Book of Songs, dreaming of a snake was seen as a sign of having a daughter. The Snake’s ability to shed its skin represents rebirth, personal growth, and fresh starts.
- Wisdom & Strategy – Instead of brute force, the Snake thrives on intelligence and adaptability, navigating challenges with precision and foresight.
A Year for Agility & Wisdom
With economic and political uncertainty ahead, perhaps a bit of Snake-like agility and wisdom will be exactly what we need in 2025.
So, to all my connections, friends, and colleagues, let me share a traditional Chinese blessing:
恭喜发财,龙马精神! (Gong Xi Fa Cai, Long Ma Jing Shen!)
Wishing you prosperity and the spirit of the dragon and horse—full of strength, energy, and success!
May this year bring you wisdom, good fortune, and exciting new beginnings! 🎉🐍✨
